A court has recognized the evidence collected by the Chelyabinsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee as sufficient to convict local residents Yevgeny Peters, Eduard Sabitov, Pyotr Mikhailov, Nikolai Fofanov, Ruslan Khafizov, found guilty of setting up a gang and membership in it under Parts 1 and 2 of Article 209, extortion by an organized group under Part 3, item “a” of Article 163, deliberate infliction of grievous bodily harm by an organized group under Part 3, item “a” of Article 111, murder aggravated by kidnapping under Part 2, items “b” and “g” of Article 105, use of violence against a representative of authority under Part 2 of Article 318, kidnapping under Part 1 of Article 126 and concealment of crimes under Article 316 of the RF Penal Code.
The court and investigators have established that a gang was set up in Chelyabinsk in 2014 to compel owners and drivers of taxi services in the town of Yuzhnouralsk to give the gang money. On 25 August 2014, in order to get rid of competition during a turf war, Sabitov, Mikhailov, Peters together with a 30-year-old resident of the city of Chelyabinsk, they had employed for the attack, inflicted grievous bodily harm to a resident of Yuzhnouralsk who controlled taxi services. On 15 October 2014, Sabitov and Mikhailov inflicted injuries to policemen of the Yuzhnouralsk police station. Later in 2014, the extorted money from a taxi service in Yuzhnouralsk. On the night of 10 August 2014, Sabitov, Mikhailov, Fofanov and Khafizov kidnapped and killed a person who had testified against Sabitov charged with a robbery and tried by the Uvelsky town court.
Peters and his gang tried to hamper the investigation. They pressured some of the witnesses so two of them and members of their families had to be taken under the state protection.
The court has sentenced Peters to 15 years in a special-security correctional facility and a fine of 1 million rubles. Sabitov and Mikhailov got 20 and 17 years in a maximum-security correctional facility respectively and a fine of 700,000 rubles. Fofanov got 20 years in a maximum-security correctional facility and a fine of 300,000 rubles, Khafizov – 8 years 6 months in a maximum-security correctional facility and a fine of 300,000 rubles. The court awarded 3 million rubles of damages to the mother of the killed man.
