In Moscow Region, employees of hospital go on trial for malpractice entailing death of patient

The Moscow Region Office of the Investigative Committee has finished criminal proceedings against a 62-year-old nurse and a 62-year-old orderly of the psychoneurological department of the Ramenskoye Central District Hospital charged with providing unsafe medical services that have entailed death of a patient by negligence under Part 2, item “c” of Article 238 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, on 30 May 2014, the nurse and the orderly were on duty in the male unit of the psychoneurological department of the hospital. There was a 9-year-old paid-for patient. At about 6:55 AM, the unattended patient went to an unlocked bathroom and took a bath. Because of his disorder the elderly man was not able to regulate the water temperature and suffered scolds to about 20% of skin.

The nurse and the orderly provided unsafe medical services by leaving the patient unattended and the door to the bathroom unlocked. The patient died of the injuries on 31 May 2014.

The investigators have run a lot of investigative operations, confiscated and analyzed medical and other documents, run complex forensic examinations.

At present, the investigators have enough evidence so the criminal case with the signed indictment has been referred to court.
