In Stavropol Territory, probe launched against policemen who used physical violence against young people while detaining them on motorway

The Stavropol Territory Office of the Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings against two traffic police inspectors for the town of Pyatigorsk suspected of a murder under Part 2, item “g” of Article 105, and a commander and an inspector of the same traffic police unit suspected of abusing their power under Part 3, item “a” of Article 286 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, on the night of 18 March 2017, the said traffic police inspectors tried to stop a BMW 528i vehicle in Pyatigorsk due to violation of the road code, however the driver ignored the demand to stop the vehicle and continued movement. During a pursuit the car was made to pull over and the two inspectors beat the driver and the passenger of the vehicle. The driver died on the scene.

By now all four of the suspects have been detained and the investigators are going to ask courts to remand them in custody pending trial. The investigators have finished the primary operations to find and document the traces of the crimes. They examined the crime scene, confiscated the car of the victims, ordered a number of forensic inquiries, analyzed footage from a dashboard camera of the traffic police car, which will also be run for evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
