Head of Komi Office of Federal Penitentiary Service charged with embezzlement, investigators request custody

The Komir Republic investigating bodies of the Russia’s Investigative Committee have charged Head of the Komi Republic Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service Alexander Protopopov with embezzlement committed by a group of people in conspiracy, using official position and on a very large scale (part 4 of article 160 of the RF Penal Code).

The Komi Republic Investigations Directorate is requesting a court to remand the accused in custody pending trial. This request is motivated by the fact that according to investigators, Protopopov can flee from investigative authorities and court, put pressure on witnesses and other accused, take measures to destroy objects or documents relevant for the investigation, use his connections to resist investigators or take any other actions to hamper the investigation.

We remind that according to investigators in the period between June 2014 and August 2015, the accused violated the law when together with former deputy chief of the Komi Republic Office of the Federal Penitentiary Service Valery Ivanov, head of penal settlement No 34 Roman Korzhov, with complicity of OOO Estet represented by its representative Ramal Dzhabbarly took apart and took away over 7 thousand armored concrete slabs that made over 50 km of motorway near the village of Vozhskoye, Udorsky District which was in federal ownership. Their wrongdoings caused the Russian Federation damage of more than 6 million rubles.

The investigation is ongoing.
