In Sverdlovsk Region, probe launched in sub-quality services in private day care facility

A fire started today’s morning in one of private day care facilities in 8 Marta Street in Yekaterinburg while the children and staff were there. 4 children and 4 adults were taken to hospital. The Sverdlovsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation in a crime under Part 2, item “b” of Article 238 of the RF Penal Code (rendering services that do not meet safety requirements and meant for children under 6 years of age).

According to the information we have, most of the hospitalized children and adults inhaled smoke while one of the children aged 3, suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns of 8% of his skin. At the present time all the injured are being treated.

According to a preliminary version, the sofa caught a fire after a short circuit and the fire then spread into the room. The children were evacuated and the tragedy was avoided.

At present the investigators are examining the scene, questioning the staff, eye witnesses, identifying the owners of the facility, confiscated necessary documents regulating the operation of the day care and safety of children and the staff. Forensic inquiries are going to be run to determine the degree of the injuries and the exact reason for the fire. The investigation is under personal control of the head of the Sverdlovsk Region Directorate of the Investigative Committee.
