In Karelia, probe launched against medical assistant who ignored distress call from minor

The Karelia Office of the Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings against a medical assistant of emergency medical aid of Suoyarvi Central District Hospital suspected of a crime under Part 3 of Article 293 of the RF Penal Code (negligence).

According to investigators, on 18 June 2016, the suspect was on call and got a distress call from a teenager who was in an emergency are. The teenager reported that two boats with children on board capsized on Lake Syamozero and that their life was in danger. The suspect ignored the call, did not notify the hospital’s administration about the incident, neither reported the distress call to the police and the Emergency Ministry nor logged the call in the journal. All that delayed the rescue operation and led to the death of children.

At the moment, necessary investigative operations are underway to find out all the details of the crime and collect necessary evidence. The suspect has been detained and the investigators are going to ask a court to place her in custody pending trial. The investigation is ongoing.
