In Volgograd, local resident suspected of selling medicines not registered in Russia

The Volgograd Region Office of the RF Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings against a 46-year-old local resident suspected of illegal dealing of unregistered medicines committed on a large scale under part 1 of Article 238.1 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, the suspect set up a website in spring 2013 to sell in Volgograd and around the regions medicines he had bought in India via the internet. According to properties and pharmaceutical effect claimed by the foreign producer the pills were similar to medicines legal in Russia, but not put into the RF State Register of Medicines, so there were no documents confirming their quality. At present there is no data on the consequences after taking those pills which may be dangerous for human health.

The suspect’s criminal activity was broken up by coherent operations carried out by the investigators and operative agents of the RF Interior Ministry’s Economic Security and Corruption Department.

The investigators have searched the suspect’s residence and confiscated more than 4.5 thousand pills of different names not registered in the Russian Federation. During an interrogation the suspect pleaded guilty and gave details of his crime.

Investigative operations are underway to collect and document evidence.
