Investigators interrogating man suspected of killing Rosgvardia officer in Transbaikalian Territory

On 27 November 2016, investigators detained 30-year-old resident of the settlement of Krymskoye, Mikhail Berezin on suspicion of an attempt on the life of a law-enforcer under Article 317 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, Berezin several times shot at officers of non-departmental security of the National Guard Troops from a 12caliber hunting rifle on 20 November 2016 in the settlement of Krymskoye. A 27-year-old police sergeant, a driver of the assault team, died at the scene of gun-shot wounds; a 34-year-old police warrant officer, the senior officer of the assault team, was sounded in the arm. The perpetrator then dropped the gun and took off.

The suspect’s brother came today (27 November) to the police and reported that his brother was in the town of Chita and was willing to give up. The investigators detained Berezin for 48 hours on suspicions of the crime. The man told the investigators that he had been hiding in the forest for 5 days and the past two days had been in Chita spending nights in stairwells. He also said that he was ready to tell the investigators about the circumstances surrounding the crime. At present Berezin is being transported to the settlement of Krymskoye for being charged with the attempt on the life of a law-enforcer. The investigators will interrogate Berezin in the presence of his lawyer and will check his statement on the scene. The investigators have taken clothes and other objects from Berezin, as well as biological samples to be processed for the evidence.

Papers are being drawn to take Berezin in custody pending trial. The investigation is ongoing.
