In Sverdlovsk Region, surgeon of private hospital to stand trial for negligent homicide of patient

The Sverdlovsk Region office of the Investigative Committee has finished criminal proceedings against a 55-year-old surgeon of a private hospital charged with a negligent homicide due to a professional malpractice under Part 2 of Article 109 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, in April 2016, the accused failed to properly do his professional duty in providing medical aid to a woman. Due to his negligence he chose wrong course treatment of a postoperational complication and failed to provide the patient with necessary qualified medical aid to diagnose and treat a hemorrhage after a planned surgery of taking out polyps from her nose which led to severe nose bleeding and death of the woman in early May 2016 of an oxygen starvation of brain caused by massive blood loss. The said circumstances were revealed by a number of investigative operations, including a forensic inquiry.

During a preliminary probe the accused denied the charges. However, the investigators have enough evidence against him, so after the accused is served a copy of the signed indictment, the criminal case is going to be referred to court.

It should also be noted that investigator has filed a request with the administration of the hospital so that they take effective steps to eliminate the reasons and conditions that led to the patient’s death. Another request was sent to the regional Ministry of Healthcare and the office of Roszdravnadzor (the federal healthcare inspectorate) so that they also took necessary measures.
