In Moscow, member of Novgorod Region Duma held on suspicion of fraud

The Moscow Directorate of the Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings against a 33-year-old deputy of the Novgorod Region Duma of the sixth convocation suspected of a fraud on a very large scale under part 4 of Article 159 of the RF Penal Code.

According to investigators, the deputy got the information that the Moscow Police Department was investigating a criminal case under which the accused were being held in custody and decided to use it for his own advantage. He said to an acquaintance of one of the accused that he had extensive connections within law-enforcement bodies and would be able to arrange for the accused to be released from custody for a reward of 2 million US dollars and also that he would be able to make some positive effect on the investigation. The deputy was detained by law-enforcers on 6 December 2016, upon receiving the money under an operation held in Moscow.

The crime was revealed thanks to joint operations of the Investigative Committee’s Moscow Directorate, agents of the Federal Security Service and Moscow Economic Security and Corruption Department of the Interior Ministry’s Directorate.

Soon the suspect is going to be charged and is now expecting restraint. Necessary investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances surrounding the crime. The investigation is ongoing.
