An explosion happened on the morning of 11 December 2016, in a production workshop of OOO Intekhprom, a limited liability company, in the town of Nizhnekamsk. The explosion led to a fire and partial collapse of the building. At least 5 people died at the scene, six more were taken to a hospital, including 3 in grave condition. The Tatarstan Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in safety breach at explosive facilities entailing death of two or more people by negligence under Part 3 of Article 217 of the RF Penal Code.

At present, investigators and criminalists are working at the scene. Responders are clearing the debris and looking for other possible victims. Investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigators are going to give legal assessment to the actions of officials responsible for safety at the plant. The investigation is ongoing.
