Former member of Karelia legislative assembly jailed

A court has recognized the evidence gathered by the second department of the Investigative Committee’s Directorate based in the city of Saint Petersburg sufficient to convict former member of the Karelia Legislative Assembly Ivan Romanov. He was found guilty of crimes under Part 3, item “a” of Article 132 (sexual abuse of a minor) and part 1 of Article 151 of the RF Penal Code (involvement of a minor in the systematic use of alcoholic drinks).

The court and investigators have revealed that from 2012 to 2013, Romanov together with education deputy director of the White Sea and Kale Onega branch of The Admiral Makarov State University of Marine and River Fleet, a federal state-funded educational institution, Oleg Semyonov sodomized and sexually abused underage cadets of the said educational institution using violence and their helpless condition. They also involved the minors into drinking alcohol.

On 22 March 2016, the charges against Semyonov were dropped due to his death.

The court has sentenced Romanov to 20 years in a maximum-security correctional facility.
