In Omsk Region, suicides of two teens urged to kill themselves via social media prevented

The Omsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in soliciting two 13-year-old girls to commit suicide under Article 110 of the RF penal Code.

According to investigators, in February 2017, the 13-year-old girls joined closed pro-suicidal online groups and chatted with unidentified people who used psychological pressure to give them dangerous tasks with the ultimate aim of killing themselves. Mother of one of the girls accidentally learnt about it when she had asked her daughter about a strange symbol scratched on her arm. She then checked the girl’s chats and tipped off the police.

At present, a set of investigative and search operations are underway to identify people involved in the crime. Steps are being taken to confiscate and examine the girls’ computers. The injured parties, parents and other witnesses are being questioned. The investigators are on the lookout for other teenagers who may have fallen under the influence of the suspects. In addition, the investigative authorities are planning a number of steps to prevent suicides among teenagers, which include psychological aid. The investigation is ongoing.
