In Tver Region, check underway in media reports about production of caviar that might be dangerous for people

On 6 March 2017, it became known from mass media reports that operative agents had confiscated a ton of caviar in the town of Rzhev, Tver Region intended for expensive supermarkets in Moscow. It turned out that the elite product was substituted for Chinese caviar which was repackaged in buildings refitted into fishing complexes. The caviar came to the plant from China. It was poured into jars labeled Zoloto Kaspiya and then went to elite supermarkets in Moscow. The mass media reports say that some checks had been run and showed that some of the samples taken were not in the line with microbiological norms and may be dangerous for people who eat this caviar. The Tver Region Office of the Investigative Committee is now running a check.

By now investigators and criminalists of the regional investigative authority jointly with specialists of Rospotrebnadzor (a federal customer protection authority) have examined the production complex in Tzhev, took samples for tests and requested from Rospotrebnadzor materials of previous checks it ran.

In addition, there is a decision of the Tver Region commercial court dated 28 February 2017 according to which the Tver Region branch of Rospotrebnadzor had filed a petition with the court asking to sentence OOO Rzhev Fishing Plant to an administrative punishment. On 25 January 2017, the branch had checked the caviar workshop of the plant and had found products without necessary marking, some of them with expired shelf life and with no certificates confirming its quality and safety. The commercial court fined Rzhev Fishing Plant 150,000 rubles and confiscated the arrested products. The investigators are going to make a procedural decision after the check.
