Following order of Investigative Committee Chairman probe launched against man who insulted law enforcers in Nizhny Novgorod Region

The Nizhny Novgorod Region Office of the Investigative Committee has initiated criminal proceedings against 33-year-old Sergei Smirnov suspected of insulting a representative of the authority under Article 319 of the RF Penal Code.

On the evening of 2 May 2017 a federal TV channel broadcast coverage of illegal actions committed by a citizen who insulted police officers on duty. The Chairman of the Investigative Committee ordered the head of the regional investigative authority to run a check into the incident and if there were enough reasons to open an investigation against the driver.

According to investigators, on the evening of 1 May 2017, traffic police officers of the town of Dzerzhinsk, arrived at Pozharsky Street after a report had been received that a car ran over a stroller with a baby inside. The report appeared to be false, but the traffic police officers saw that the man who had almost ran over the stroller on his VAZ 2114 was drunk. The officers did not let the man drive again and towed his car away. While the car was being loaded on the tow truck, the man’s friend named Smirnov offended the officers using obscene words.

The investigators are going to press charges and order a restraint soon. They have found out that the drunken driver was fined in 2016 for the similar violation – driving under the influence. The investigators are going to give legal assessment to his actions as well. The investigation is ongoing.
