In Nizhny Novgorod Region, bus driver found guilty of traffic accident killing three


A court has recognized the evidence gathered by the Nizhny Novgorod Region Office of the Investigative Committee as sufficient to convict a bus driver. He was found guilty of violation of road code entailing death of two or more people under Part 5 of Article 264 of the RF Criminal Code.

According to investigators, about 4 AM on 21 May 2015, a Mercedes bus collided with a truck on a detour road 11 km from the settlement of Novoye Likeyevo, Kstovo District, Nizhny Novogord Region. The bus was travelling from the city of Kazan to Saint Petersburg and was carrying 20 people including 12 children. 10 children aged 10 and 11 years were injured in the traffic accident, three people were killed including a girl. All the children were taken to hospitals in Nizhny Novgorod.

The investigators analyzed a footage taken from a dashcam of the truck. Using this footage, they managed to determine the speed of both vehicles and that it was the bus driver who took the wrong lane. The bus driver admitted his guilty explaining that he had fallen asleep while driving.

The court has sentenced the man to 4 years 7 months in a minimum-security correctional facility and banned him from driving for 3 years. The accused was taken in custody from the court room.
