In Sverdlovsk Region, probe finished in attempted murder of child committed in front of crowd

The Sverdlovsk Region Office of the Investigative Committee has finished criminal proceedings against a 39-year-old resident of the city of Yekaterinburg charged with an attempted murder of a child under Part 3 of Article 30, Part 2, item “c” of Article 105 of the RF Criminal Code.

According to investigators, on the evening of 18 April 2017, the accused under the influence of alcohol hit his 4-year-old son hard on the ground on the corner of Krasnykh Komandirov and Kosmonavtov Streets in the city of Yekaterinburg. Then the man grabbed the lying boy on his clothes and hit his head hard on the ground several times.

A few passersby saw it and two men intervened. They saved the boy’s life.

The bigger and stronger perpetrator aggressively confronted the man who protected the boy and whom he though “was meddling in other people’s business”. However, he was stopped by another man who was riding a bike and could not pass by the man ruthlessly beating the child. The second man used physical strength to stop the perpetrator.

When the man was immobilized, people around started helping the boy who was lying on the ground. They got him up and started quieting him down.

An ambulance was passing by at the time and its crew rushed to help. Being of humane profession, the paramedics provided medical aid to the perpetrator as well.

It’s easy to imagine what expected the son if good citizens had not stepped in.

Both local and federal mass media reported the outrage. The investigation resonated with the public. Most experienced employees of the regional investigative authority, including investigators and criminalists, were dispatched to find out all the circumstances surrounding the crime, its reasons and contributing factors. Deputy head of the authority was charged with the preliminary investigation, while the head of the authority supervised the investigation.

Thanks to the steps taken the probe took the shortest time. The investigators questioned more than 20 witnesses, ran several forensic examinations, including medical and DNA tests, examined the incident scene, seized and examined items relative to the case, requested and analyzed necessary documents, including personal characteristics of the accused and conditions in his family.

One of the men who protected the boy was identified and interviewed. He gave very important pieces of evidence which helped to find the truth. He is now expecting an award from the Investigative Committee, while the investigators are trying to find the other one of the protectors as his actions also deserve to be awarded.

The investigators have enough evidence, so the criminal case with the signed indictment has been referred to court.
