In Volgograd Region, probe launched in attack on policeman

A traffic police inspector has been taken today to a hospital in the town of Kamyshin with a gunshot wound to his head. The senior lieutenant was wounded in the line of duty when he was trying to arrest suspects of robbing a jewelry store. The Volgograd Region Office of the Investigative Committee has launched an investigation in attempt on the life of a law-enforcer under Article 317 of the RF Criminal Code.

According to investigators, today about 2 PM, three unidentified men wearing camouflage and ski masks robbed a jewelry store in the town of Kamyshin. They took jewelry worth some 5 million rubles and took off. Police had information about the vehicle the robbers were using to get away and put on BOLO. A traffic police unit spotted the car on Volgograd-Kamyshin highway. The officers shot in the air first and then started to shot at the wheels, but the robbers opened fired and wounded one of the officers.

The wounded inspector is now at hospital. Fortunately, the wound is not serious and his life is out of danger.

Investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances surrounding the crimes and to track down the robbers. A task force of the regional investigative authority, including investigators and senior officials of the first major cases office and experienced criminalists, has been dispatched to Kamyshin.
