Alexander Bastrykin orders Central office supervise probes into possible medical malpractice

Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin has ordered the Central Office to supervise case opened in reckless homicide of a woman under Part 2 of Article 109 and injuring a baby during childbirth under Part 2 of Article 118 of the RF Criminal Code.

Acceding to investigators, on 4 May 2017, a baby-girl was severely injured as a result of a medical error in a maternity hospital in Nevsky District, Saint Petersburg and the woman was taken to hospital where she died a few days later.

Mr. Bastrykin also instructed a corresponding department of the Central office to control a check run in Nizhny Novgorod Region into causing third-degree burns to a 2-week-old baby girl in Aibolit children’s hospital and look at a procedural decision made.

The Chairman ordered that all the said incidents, investigative and procedural operations, run by regional investigative authorities should be thoroughly checked and if there are enough reasons the actions of medical workers should be classified as crimes. The investigators are going to find out what was the cause of death and injuries of people, whether it was wrong diagnosis, inappropriate methods of treatment or delayed medical care.
