Probe launched in Sakhalin Region following media reports on death of three-month girl in hospital

The Sakhalin Region Office of the Investigative Committee have revealed a mass media report that a baby died at regional children’s hospital due to malpractice of doctors.

The Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk investigative authority launched a check into the report and after this a criminal investigation into reckless homicide under Part 2 of Article 109 of the RF Criminal Code.

According to investigators, an ambulance delivered a three-month-old girl to the hospital at about 11:30 AM, on 17 November 2017. The girl had a fever of 39.4 degrees C and was examined by a doctor. At about 1:30 Pm, the baby was transferred to the first pediatric unit and was kept there until 11 PM. Over the said period of time, no one of the hospital staff examined or treated the girl in a proper way. As a result, the girl got worse and she was urgently delivered to the intensive care unit, where she died on 23 November 2017.

This way, inaction of the hospital’s staff who failed to do their duty in a proper manner caused the girl’s death.

At present, investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigators have seized and are analyzing corresponding medical documents, questioning those involved in the incident, looking into cause of death and if there were defects in medical care provided. The investigation continues.
