Suspects of killing resident of blockade Leningrad detained in St. Petersburg

The Saint Petersburg Office of the Investigative Committee continues an investigation into murder under Part 1 of Article 105 of the RF Criminal Code after the body of a 93-year-old woman who had survived the siege of Leningrad, and the oldest worker of Mariinsky Theater was found on 21 November 2017 in a flat in Varshavskaya Street.

As the crime had wide public resonance, the most experienced investigators and staffers of the Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Region Directorate of the Investigative Committee were commissioned with the probe.

2 Armenian nationals aged 34 and 33 and a worker of a charity aged 42 have been detained during investigative and search operations.

According to investigators, the woman, a charity worker, had been taking care of the victim for several months and decided to kill the elderly woman to get hold of her money. She involved two of her acquaintances for a reward. On 20 November 2017, she opened the door to her accomplice, who smothered the victim, while another accomplice was on the watch. The suspects search the flat and stole the victim’s credit card and an old photograph of a singer with an autograph. They, however, failed to get money from the credit card as they did not know the code.

The suspects are now expecting charges and custodial restraint. The investigation continues.
