Investigation finished in three crimes committed by Dmitry Zakharchenko

The Major Cases Directorate of the Investigative Committee has finished investigation against former deputy head of the T department of the Interior Ministry’s Economic Security and Corruption Directorate Dmitry Zakharchenko charged with two counts of bribery under Article 290 and prevention of preliminary investigation under Article 294 of the RF Criminal Code. The accuse and his lawyers have started reading the case files.

According to investigators, in 2014, Zakharchenko and his accomplice, a police officer, tipped off inspectorates to check a number of enterprises owned by a businessman involved in food supplies and restaurant business, to get a bribe from him. Realizing that his business would be impossible to run under the such circumstances, the businessman had to give Zakharchenko and his accomplice 800 thousand US dollars, though their initial demand was 5 million US dollars.

In 2015, Zakharchenko and his accomplice demanded from the same businessman 50% discount card to be used in his restaurants as a reward for general patronage. Going to the restaurants several times a week and using the card Zakharchenko saved more than 3.5 million rubles, which constitutes a non-monetary bribe.

In 2016, Zakharchenko warned an acquaintance of his that her office was going to be searched as part of a fraud investigation and made sure that all the documents and office equipment were taken out before the search.

Along with a large sum of money in different currencies, the property of the accused found seized by investigators and then arrested following a court decision, included 27 properties, including 12 expensive flats. The source of the confiscated money is being checked, but it is safe to say now they it was obtained by illegal means, including bribery.

There is an ongoing investigation into two more counts of bribery and the investigators are working to see if Zakharchenko was involved in other crimes. His accomplice is wanted.
