Probe launched in death of child in fire in Orenburg Region

The Orenburg Region Office of the Investigative Committee has opened an investigation in reckless homicide under Part 1 of Article 109 of the RF Criminal Code after a child was killed in a fire.

According to investigators, the house that burned was occupied by a 22-year-old woman, her boyfriend and her two children. On 3 January 2018, the woman went out leaving the two children home alone. While she was away, fire started in a wooden annex and quickly spread on the house. When the woman came back some half an hour later she saw the flames. She managed to save only her 9-month-old son, while his 3-year-old brother died in the burning building.

According to preliminary information, the fire started because of fire safety breach during the use of a gas stove.

The investigators are going to give proper legal assessment to the actions of neglect prevention officials and find out the reasons and contributing factors of the crime.

At present, investigative operations are underway to find out all the circumstances surrounding the incident. A forensic medical and fire technical examinations have been ordered to find the cause of death and the fire. The investigation continues.
