Chairman of Investigative Committee of Russia launched probe against the magistrate suspected in causing road accident entailing death of two people in Karachay-Cherkess Republic

Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia launched a probe against Maksim Yakush, a 40-year-old magistrate from Urupsky district of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic who is suspected in violation of the rules for traffic safety and operation of transport vehicles entailing by negligence the death of two persons (Article 264, part 5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

According to the investigation, on the 12th of May, 2018 Yakush, the magistrate of the judicial sub-district №1 of the Urupsky district, was driving a vehicle Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and swerved across the line into oncoming traffic on the 44th kilometre of the federal road “Caucasus” in Cherkessk direction colliding into a Kia Rio vehicle that had a driver and two passengers aboard.

As a result of the accident the Kia Rio driver was delivered to the hospital with serious injuries. The 19-year-old Stavropol citizen that was riding in the front seat died of his wounds at the scene and the 36-year-old passenger of the back seat subsequently died in ICU of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic Clinical Hospital. The magistrate himself was also delivered to the hospital with minor injuries.

On the 20th of September, 2018 the qualification board of judges of the Supreme Court of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic considered the submission of the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, accepted the arguments given in the presented documents and gave its consent to institute criminal proceedings against the magistrate.

The investigation is to be conducted by the Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.

The Investigation Department has already carried out a number of judicial examinations and has interviewed witnesses and victims of the accident. In terms of the launched probe the investigators will request additional judicial examinations, interview witnesses, and carry out investigative operations and cordon-and-search activities in order to establish in detail all the facts of the road accident.
