Investigation into former Deputy Chairman of Nizhny Novgorod Regional Legislative Assembly completed
The Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation completed an investigation into Oleg Sorokin, the former Deputy Chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Legislative Assembly. He is charged with bribe-taking on an especially large scale (Article 290, Part 6 of the Criminal Code of Russia) and with being an accomplice of kidnapping. Moreover, Yevgeny Voronin and Roman Markeev were also charged with kidnapping and exceeding of official powers (Article 126, Part 2, Paragraphs A, C, D; Article 33, Part 5; and Article 286, Part 3, Paragraphs A, B of the Criminal Code of Russia).
According to the investigation, in 2004, Voronin, acting as the Chief of a Department of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Directorate for Internal Affairs and intending to obtain information about persons involved in a murder attempt against Sorokin in 2003, had developed a plan of psychological pressure to put on a person that could have possessed such information.
Acting under the plan, police officers including Markeev had traced the victim down, forced him into Sorokin’s car, and driven him to a forest where Sorokin had used violence against him and threatened him with violence. They had released the victim after obtaining the required information.
Moreover, in 2013, when Sorokin had been the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod, one entrepreneur had provided him with financial service of the total worth over 30 million roubles, for general patronage and condoning through the ranks in settling of questions falling within Sorokin’s competence in land use, urban planning, and other legal framework in his entrepreneurial activities within Nizhny Novgorod.
The investigation gathered enough evidence; therefore, the criminal case with the approved indictment was sent to the court to be tried on the merits.
