In Kemerovo Region, probe launched into fire in private house entailed death of eight people, including six children

On November 6, 2018, around 5 AM local time, it was reported that bodies of seven people, five of whom were between 2 and 12 years old, were found in one of the private houses in the town of Yurga after a fire was extinguished. A 42-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy, who later died in a hospital, were hospitalized from the address as well. The Kemerovo Regional Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation launched a probe into an offence under Part 3 of Article 109 (infliction of death by negligence on two or more people) of the Criminal Code of Russia.

As part of the investigation, the investigators follow clues for three main versions of the incident: ash inflammation, careless handling of fire when smoking, and short circuit.

In the near future, fire and technical analyses will be arranged to establish the exact cause of fire. It should be noted that, according to preliminary information, the family had not been under preventive supervision and had not come to the attention of law enforcement authorities. It has been established that the family had been living in the house without a registration.

An operational headquarters has been set up at the scene of the fire; investigators and forensic experts of the Regional Directorate of the Investigative Committee are working; and police and Ministry of Emergency Situations officers are involved to conduct a comprehensive study and establish the circumstances of the incident. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
