Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia refers probes into death of girl in Smolensk Region and negligence of authorities involved in the tragedy to the Central Office for further investigation
Upon instruction of the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia the investigations into the death of the 14-year-old girl (Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Russia) and into negligence of supervisory and governmental authorities involved in the tragedy (Article 293 of the Criminal Code of Russia) were referred to the Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the further comprehensive and impartial investigation.
Alexander Bastrykin instructed the investigators to carry out a comprehensive investigation of reasons and circumstances of the girl’s death and to do their utmost to identify all persons whose actions (inaction) led to the tragedy, in the shortest time possible.
Upon instruction of the Chairman of the Committee, the investigation will provide a legal assessment of the discharge of their duties by social service representatives; Smolensk regional juvenile, guardianship, healthcare, and educational authorities; and the municipal authorities of Safonovo.
At the moment, the investigators are working with relatives and classmates of the deceased girl, interrogating the staff of the educational institution and local municipal and executive authorities, and seizing the required documents. The investigation raised a number of questions regarding the staff of the medical institution where the girl’s mother works; the investigators will assess the mental environment in the hospital and check the information about possible discrimination of the woman by her colleagues.
The investigation will send a recommendation to the Governor of Smolensk Region to take timely measures prescribed by his power to prevent similar tragedies in the region.
