Charges pressed against a member of Shamil Basaev’s gang that attacked Budennovsk in 1995

The Main Investigations Directorate for the North Caucasian Federal District continues the investigation into the armed attack against institutions, citizens and law enforcement officers of Budennovsk, Stavropol Region, committed by Shamil Basaev’s gang on June 14, 1995.

On November 20, the investigators arrested a previously unknown member of Basaev’s gang who was kept in custody due to extreme gravity of committed crimes.

As a result of investigative activities, investigators managed to obtain irrefutable proof of his involvement in the attack against Budennovsk of 1995 as a member of Basaev’s gang.

Considering sufficient evidence, said gang member was accused of offences under Part 2 of Article 209 of Criminal Code of Russia (participation in a stable armed group (band) and in its assaults); Part 3 of Article 205 Criminal Code of Russia (terrorism); Paragraphs C, H, M of Article 102 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (intentional murder of two or more persons committed by a generally dangerous method); Paragraphs E, H, M of the Criminal Code of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (intentional murder of two or more persons during the discharge by them their official duties and in order to obstruct discharge of those duties); Part 2 of Article 126.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (taking of hostages).

At the moment, investigators are establishing the role and certain activities performed by the accused during the attack and checking his involvement in other crimes not connected with the investigated probe. Moreover, they are carrying out active measures to identify other gang members involved in the attack. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
