Two participants of 2000 attack on Pskov Airborne Division arrested

The Main Investigations Directorate over North Caucasian Federal District of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation continues the investigation into an armed attack committed by the united armed gang led by Basaev and Khattab in forested mountain area of Ulus-Kert rural settlement in Shatoy District of the Chechen Republic against military personnel of the 6th squadron of the 104th regiment of the 76th Pskov Airborne Division that had entailed the death of 84 soldiers and injuries of varying severity to 4 soldiers.

On November 28, investigators together with the Department for Criminal Intelligence and Surveillance of the Service for Defence of Constitutional Order and Fight against Terrorism of the Federal Security Service of Russia arrested two previously unknown members of Basaev’s gang - Nazhmudin Dudiev and Ibrahim Donashev - at suspicion of committing of offences under Article 279; Part 2 of Article 209; and Article 317 of the Criminal Code of Russia (armed rebellion; banditry and encroachment on the life of an officer of a law-enforcement agency). The suspects were kept in custody due to extreme gravity of the committed crimes. They will be charged in the coming days.

At the moment, investigators are establishing the role and certain activities performed by the accused during the attack and checking their involvement in other crimes not related to the current investigation. Moreover, they are carrying out active measures to identify other gang members involved in the attack. The criminal investigation is ongoing.

Thirteen participants of the firefight, including Ukrainian citizen Alexander Malofeev - a member of the Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian People’s Self-Defence Party, were previously sentenced to long-term imprisonment. At the moment, the court is hearing a case into two more accomplices.
