In the Udmurt Republic, probe launched into fire entailed death of four people, including teenager


The Udmurt Republican Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened an investigation into a fire in a private house in the town of Sarapul, which entailed death of four people, including a teenager, under Part 3 of Article 109 (infliction of death by negligence) and Part 2 of Article 293 (negligence) of the Criminal Code of Russia.

According to the investigation, today, around 3:40 am, emergency services were reported about the fire in an eight-apartment wooden house on Truda Street in Sarapul. It was established that at the time of the fire ten people were in the house; six of them, including four young children, were evacuated during a rescue operation. In one of the apartments, an 86-year-old woman died by fire, and bodies of 32-year-old and 59-year-old women and a 13-year-old minor, who had been living there, were found in another apartment. One of the victims, evacuating by herself, jumped out of the window of the second floor, received injuries and was hospitalised.

The Chief of the Investigations Directorate and forensic investigators of the Investigations Directorate went off to the scene. Currently, an inspection of the scene is being carried out; an arrangement for a forensic examination and fire investigation is being considered; eyewitnesses are being questioned. The alleged cause is the careless handling of fire.

At the same time, during the investigation, the theory of negligence of supervisory agencies’ employees authorised to inspect compliance with the fire safety requirements at residential buildings will be examined.
