In Moscow Region, probe launched into production and sale of cheese products, which do not meet safety standards

The Moscow Regional Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal inquiry into production and sale of goods, which do not meet safety standards (Part 1 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of Russia).

According to the investigation, employees of a company located in the town of Ruza melted expired cheese removing mould-damaged parts and secondarily packaged it with logos of well-known brands for further sale. The total weight of newly manufactured products amounted to more than 10 tonnes. The cheese products were held in stock for the purpose of further sale, where on November 26, 2018 they were found and seized by officers of the Economic Security and Anti-Corruption Department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Ruza Urban District.

According to an expert’s conclusion, said cheese products do not meet standards of safety to lives or health of consumers due to the presence of Escherichia coli in cheese samples. Thereby, the manufactured products do not meet safety standards and represent a threat to the life and health of consumers.

The investigator scheduled to interrogate the directors and founders of the company, as well as the staff and the accountant. Requests were submitted to the Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) to suspend the activities of this organization, as well as to chain stores that were selling the low-quality cheese products with the demand to remove the goods from the shelves. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
