On September 11, our colleague Sergey Vasyukovich killed in the line of duty would have turned 36

Today would have been the 36th birthday of the investigator of the Borovichsky Interdistrict Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia in Novgorod Region Sergey Vasyukovich whose life was tragically cut short on March 3, 2010, in the line of duty. Sergey was only 26 years old.

Sergey Vasyukovich’s school in Pestov city of Novgorod Region was named after him--the solemn ceremony was organized in conjunction with a festive lineup on September 1, 2019. The ceremony was attended by relatives, colleagues, and friends of Sergey. Last year, a specialized class for the Investigation field of study was open in this school in the memory of Sergey Vasyukovich. Children are taught by investigators of the Novgorod Regional Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia. Each school student honors the memory of Sergey Vasyukovich, is proud of his feat, and is seeking to be like him. Sergey is a natural example of courage, bravery, loyalty to the Motherland and to the profession. Today, on the birthday of Sergey Vasyukovich, investigators of the Novgorod Regional Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia have carried out a lesson of courage for the students of the specialized class to memorize the feat of the deceased investigator once again. Due to such classes, some of the students have already expressed the desire to become investigators like Sergey Vasyukovich.

Almost 10 years have already passed from Sergey’s death, but his relatives still often notice fresh flowers left on his grave by his friends and colleagues. People remember Sergey as a principled, responsible officer who saved the lives of his colleagues and civilians with his life. On that day, March 3, 2010, the operative group including seconded Sergey Vasyukovich was carrying out a special operation for the detention of armed gang members in Ekazhevo rural settlement of Nazransky District of the Republic of Ingushetia. Members of this gang (led by Alexander Tikhomirov, also known as Said Buryatsky) were involved in a number of large-scale crimes including undermining of a bullet train Nevsky express in November 2009. Sergey Vasyukovich was killed by automatic gunfire from a terrorist during the search of a building.

On April 30, 2010, Sergey Vasyukovich was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage upon a Presidential Decree. Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin personally handed the award to Sergey’s mother Nina Nikolaevna and took part in the ceremony of unveiling of a monument on Sergey Vasyukovich’s grave in November 2010.
