Head of Department of the Public Prosecution Service of the Republic of Bashkortostan suspected of exceeding official powers and illegally obtaining information comprising state secret

An investigation is opened into a 55-year-old Head of the Department on Supervision of Criminal Procedure and Operational Search Activities of the Public Prosecution Service of the Republic of Bashkortostan on suspicion of committing offences under Paragraph D of Part 2 of Article 283.1 (illegal receipt of information comprising a state secret), and Part 1 of Article 286 (exceeding official powers) of the Criminal Code of Russia.

According to the investigation, in March 2017, an acquaintance had approached the suspect with a request to provide wiretapping of his former spouse’s telephone conversations. The suspect had agreed and demanded that the Deputy Head of a subdivision of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs organize wiretapping of the woman’s phone. Fearing the negative consequences due to his subordinated position to the suspect, the police officer had agreed and ensured that the necessary investigative measures had been carried out, and the results had been passed on to the suspect, who, in turn, had passed them on to his acquaintance.

The commission of the crime was revealed due to operational investigative activities carried out by the investigators of the Bashkortostan Republican Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia together with the officers of the Bashkortostan Directorate of the Federal Security Service of Russia.
