In Kabardino-Balkar Republic, probe launched into encroachment on lives of law enforcement officers


The Kabardino-Balkar Republican Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia has launched a probe under Part 2 of Article 222 (illegal acquisition, storage and bearing of weapons committed by a group of persons), Part 2 of Article 222.1 (illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation and bearing of explosive or explosive devices committed by a group of persons in preliminary conspiracy), and Article 317 (encroachment on the lives of law enforcement officers) of the Criminal Code of Russia.

According to the investigation, around 5 AM of September 18, 2019, the officers of the Kabardino-Balkar Republican Directorate of the Federal Security Service had blocked two members of an extremist religious group in one of the buildings of Chegem. Operative information shows that they had been preparing for committing offences in the region. The indicated persons had responded to the demand of the law enforcement officers to lay down their weapons and surrender with fire from their firearms.  The attackers had been liquidated during the firefight. No law enforcement officers had been injured.

During an inspection of the scene, the investigators found two machine guns, ammunition for them, and a self-made explosive device. According to preliminary data, one of the suspects is a citizen of a neighboring republic born in 1999, while another one is a local citizen born in 1995. The criminal investigation is ongoing
