Delegation of the Investigative Committee takes part in festive events dedicated to anniversary of foundation of the Republic of South Ossetia

Upon the invitation of President of the Republic of South Ossetia Anatoly Babilov, the delegation of the Investigative Committee of Russia took part in special events dedicated to the 29th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic that took place in Tskhinvali.

South Ossetia is an important partner and ally of Russia. The cooperation between our countries is based on a solid foundation of friendship and good neighborliness, which is also a basis for cooperation of law enforcement bodies of both countries.

For several years already, this is a format of constructive cooperation between the Investigative Committee of Russia and relevant authorities of the South Ossetia. After the events of August 2008, officers of the Investigative Committee of Russia did their utmost to help their colleagues to register evidence of the crimes committed by Georgian authorities and military personnel. Then the Investigative Committee conducted a massive amount of work to investigate the genocide of Ossetians as an ethnic group and mass murders of Russian citizens residing in the South Ossetian territory, as well as of Russian peacekeepers. Official documents of Georgian armed forces were discovered and seized in the area of the conflict. Over 30,000 items and documents were considered to be physical evidence. Numerous breaches of international contracts on principles of settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, rules of the international humanitarian law, and the universally recognized human and civil rights and freedoms on behalf of the Georgian party were documented. As a result, the investigation established all circumstances of the Georgian military aggression.

The event also hosted a working meeting of representatives of the Investigative Committee of Russia with the direction of law enforcement bodies of South Ossetia. The participants discussed the results of the interagency cooperation and future plans on the development and strengthening of cooperation between law enforcement bodies of South Ossetia and Russia.

The colleagues exchanged their opinions on improvement of the work for providing legal assistance to the implementation of assigned tasks in the area of pre-trial criminal proceedings.

In conclusion of the meeting, the parties confirmed their readiness to do constructive work on mutual issues, as well as to further strengthen the Russian-Ossetian partnership in all areas of work for the benefit of people of our countries.
