Suspect of murder of abbot of Holy Trinity Danilov Men Monastery in Yaroslavl Region identified

The Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia in close interaction with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia has solved the murder of abbot of the Holy Trinity Danilov Men Monastery Hegumen Daniil in Pereyaslavl-Zalessky of Yaroslavl Region, committed in July 2016.

Investigators and officers of the Main Directorate of Criminal Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs carried out a massive amount of work to check the involvement in the offence of over 3,000 persons. The circle of assessed persons included members of the entourage of the abbot, persons addicted to drugs, previously convicted persons including those sentenced for the commission of crimes against religious objects and other categories of persons. All of them were subjected to investigative measures. Results of over 430 forensic examinations have been studied. As a result, the investigation obtained data on possible involvement in the offence of 31-year-old Alexander Avdeyev.

During interrogation, he disclosed circumstances of the murder of Hegumen Daniil and explained that he had stolen 1 million rubles to spend on personal needs. His statement corresponds with the previously obtained evidence.

Avdeyev is currently subject to additional investigative actions; search activities aimed to establish additional evidence of his guilt are ongoing.
