Man accused of Ivan Krapivin’s murder to stand trial

The Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia finished the investigation into Roman Pronin accused of the murder of Ivan Krapivin and attempted murder of his mother (Paragraph B of Part 2 of Article 105; Part 3 of Article 30, Paragraph A of Part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of Russia).

According to the investigation, on May 1, 2017, in Severodvinsk of Arkhangelsk Region, Roman Pronin attacked local citizen Natalya Krapivina with a knife during a domestic conflict. Son of the victim Ivan Krapivin, who was 15 years old at the moment of the incident, strongly defended his mother, but the attacker hit him hard several times on the head with a metal dumbbell.

The victim was hospitalized and subject to surgery in Severodvinsk city hospital. Subsequently he underwent treatment in other medical institutions; however, his injuries were very severe. Upon the initiative of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, leading experts of the Russian Ministry of Health consulted on the boy’s condition and treatment. The child was referred for further treatment to the State Budgetary Healthcare Institution “Emergency Children’s Surgery and Traumatology Research Institute” of the Moscow Healthcare Department, where Ivan was supervised by doctors and Leonid Roshal in person. The best medical practitioners put their utmost efforts to save him, however, in December 2018 the juvenile passed away.

To that moment Pronin had already been sentenced under Articles of the Criminal Code of Russia providing responsibility for the attempted murder of two persons and was serving a long-term prison sentence. The investigation arranged an additional forensic examination that established a causal link between Pronin’s actions and the death of Ivan Krapivin. It provided grounds to annul the Pronin’s sentence and to resume investigation based on newly established circumstances. As part of the investigation, he was accused of more grave offenses - murder and attempted murder.

It must be noted that Roman Pronin didn’t admit his guilt and put forward in his defense versions of the involvement of other persons. However, all of them were refuted by the investigator. The convict was also subject to forensic psychiatric examination that proved him sane.

The investigation gathered enough evidence; therefore, the criminal case with the approved indictment was sent to the court to be tried on the merits.

Each episode of a grave offense committed against a child must receive a relevant legal assessment on behalf of criminal law - that’s what guides investigators of the Investigative Committee of Russia during the investigation of cold-blooded attacks on juveniles that cannot be explained logically. The investigation took all the required measures to collect evidence of the involvement of the perpetrator in the murder of a child intended to protect his mother. The selfless act of Vanya Krapivin will always stay in our hearts as an embodiment of genuine human values and his courage will remind his peers about a real heroic feat and love for a mother. Ivan Krapivin was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage upon a Presidential Decree for his courage, bravery and strength demonstrated at saving people under extreme circumstances.
