In Orenburg Region, man sentenced for abusive actions aboard airplane and insulting public officer
The evidence gathered by the Ural Transport Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia was found by the court to be sufficient to sentence a 37-year-old citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He was found guilty of committing an offense under Part 2 of Article 213 (hooliganism featuring resistance to a public officer) and Article 319 (public insult of a public officer) of the Criminal Code of Russia.
The investigation and the court established that, on March 11, 2019, the man who was a passenger of the flight “Orenburg-Moscow-Sheremetyevo” by a Boeing-737, while taxiing and moving the aircraft on the runway of the airport behaved aggressively towards surrounding passengers and flight attendants, thus creating a situation aboard that threatened the safety of the passengers and crew members. Owing to that, the captain of the aircraft stopped the departure and brought the plane back to the ramp. The perpetrator was removed from the flight and taken to the Orenburg airport transit police station. When delivered to the police station, the man resisted and insulted the police officer.
During the preliminary investigation, considerable efforts were made to collect the necessary evidence: at least 40 persons were questioned as witnesses and victims, 10 inspections of the scene of the incidents, searches and seizures were carried out, the relevant documents and video recordings were taken that recorded the fact of unlawful acts committed on board the aircraft, and a range of expert examinations were conducted, including a traces analysis, a forensic analysis, and a psychiatric evaluation that found the man to be sane.
The court sentenced the man to two years and one month of imprisonment in a general regime penal colony.
