The evidence gathered by the Saint Petersburg Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia was found by the court to be sufficient to sentence two men. Depending on the role of each, they were found guilty of committing offenses under Part 2 of Article 209 (banditry); Part 3 of Article 222 (illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation, or bearing of firearms, main parts or ammunition); Paragraphs A, B of Part 4 of Article 162 (robbery); Article 317 (encroachment on a life of a law enforcement officer); and Part 1 of Article 318 (use of violence against a public officer) of the Criminal Code of Russia.
The investigation and the court established that, on January 31, 2018, the convicts, acting as part of a stable armed group (gang), entered a jewelry store on Prospect Bolshevikov in Saint Petersburg and, using firearms as a threat, stole 1,104 pieces of jewelry displayed in the sales area of the store of the total value exceeding 9 million rubles.
After that, intending to flee the scene in a car, the perpetrators opened fire on Krasnogvardeisky District patrol service police officers trying to detain them at the crossing of Prospekt Industrialny and Prospekt Irinovsky; one of the police officers received a gunshot wound. Two gang participants were also injured with counter-fire; the perpetrators were detained. One of the gang participants managed to flee the crime scene. At present, he has been subjected to preventive detention in absentia and put on the international wanted list.
The property stolen from the jewelry store was returned to the owner.
Within the probe, the investigators carried out over 20 examinations, over 15 searches and seizures of items and documents of interest to the investigation, and questioned over 40 persons.
The court sentenced the perpetrators to 12 an 16 years of imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony.
