Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia visits the Syrian Arab Republic


Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia Alexander Bastrykin has made a visit to the Syrian Arab Republic. During his working trip to Damask, he has held negotiations with Ali Mamlouk, the Director of the National Security Bureau of the Syrian Arab Republic, and Hisham al-Shaar, the Minister for Justice of Syria.

The parties noted that lately a lot of work had been done for fighting terrorism and extremism and very significant steps had been made in further strengthening the legitimate authority in the Syrian Arab Republic.

Participants of the meeting agreed that it was necessary to further strengthen and develop direct contacts between Russian and Syrian law enforcement bodies for operative assistance in the investigation into terrorist offenses and shared the principal position that all persons involved in illegal activities were to be brought to justice.

The Minister for Justice of the Syrian Arab Republic took part in a discussion on the issues of implementation of the Collaboration Agreement between the Investigative Committee of Russia and the Ministry for Justice of Syria signed in March 2018 in Damascus. It was noted that there were certain positive results achieved during direct interaction between the agencies. Documents and materials received by the Russian party have significant evidentiary importance for the investigations processed by investigators of the Investigative Committee of Russia. Alexander Bastrykin suggested to Hisham al-Shaar to consider expanding cooperation in the scientific and educational areas, including staff training in educational institutions of the Investigative Committee of Russia. The Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia also presented the newest methods and equipment used by Russian forensic specialists. Alexander Bastrykin offered the Syrian colleagues to use the experience obtained by Russian specialists in forensic surveillance of the investigation.

In Damascus, the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia also met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation Alexander Yefimov and diplomats of the Embassy. Alexander Bastrykin thanked the officers of the Russian Embassy for their utmost cooperation and assistance in the organization of the work of investigators of the Committee in the Syrian Arab Republic. The diplomats that had shown special distinction in their work were awarded medals of the Investigative Committee of Russia.

On the same day, the Chairman of the Investigative Committee arrived at the Russian airbase in Khmeimim where he listened to reports of investigators on the process of investigation into offenses committed against Russian servicemen in the Syrian Arab Republic. Alexander Bastrykin gave specific instructions and recommendations on certain probes. At the same time, the Chairman of the Committee commended the high professional level of officers of the Investigative Committee of Russia demonstrated while carrying out investigative and other procedural actions in Syria. In this, he emphasized the need to strictly comply with security measures given that a very short while ago unauthorized armed gangs had been operating on most of the freed territories.
