In the Republic of Karelia, local citizen sentenced to life imprisonment for murder of two young women

The evidence gathered by the Karelia Republican Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation was found by the court to be sufficient to convict a 29-year-old man. He was found guilty of committing offenses under Part 1 of Article 111, Paragraph H of Part 2 of Article 111 (intentional infliction of severe health damage), Part 1 of Article 119 (threat of killing), and Paragraphs A, I of Part 2 of Article 105 (murder of two people out of malicious motives) of the Criminal Code of Russia.

The investigation and the court established that, in early June 2018, visiting the apartment of his acquaintance in Petrozavodsk, during a row and joint drinking of alcoholic beverages, the convict had kicked him several times and hit him on the head, inflicting severe health damage. On September 16, 2018, being in the street under the influence of alcohol and feeling animosity towards an underage girl he had been acquainted with, he had attacked her and begun to strangle her with his hands until she lost consciousness, following which he had stabbed her several times with a knife threatening to kill her. Apart from that, on September 19 through 20, 2018, in different parts of Petrozavodsk, under the influence of alcohol out of malicious motives, the convict had attacked previously unfamiliar young women of 27 and 20 years of age and stabbed them numerous times with a knife causing the victims to die at the scene.

During the investigation, investigators of the Investigative Committee of Russia carried out large-scale work to collect evidence. Investigators have submitted material evidence to the probe materials, carried out forensic examinations, and interrogated victims and witnesses.

Upon investigative motion, the court ruled to subject the accused man, who had been previously convicted and brought to justice several times for committing violent offenses, to preventive detention.

The court ruled to sentence him to life imprisonment in a special regime penal colony.
