Retired judge sentenced in Sverdlovsk Region

The evidence gathered by the Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia has been found by the court to be sufficient to sentence retired Arbitration Court judge Oleg Gavryushin. He has been found guilty of attempted bribery on an especially large scale (Part 3 of Article 30, Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of Russia).

The investigation and the court established that, in 2018, the accused intended to receive cash remuneration for making a court decision in favor of the plaintiff in the case of appealing the decision of the tax authority and engaged his son as a mediator. On May 29, 2018, once judge Gavryushin read the decision to grant the application of the plaintiff, representatives of the organization handed to the mediator 14 million rubles at the Sverdlovsk Regional Arbitration Court. The mediator was detained by officers of the Sverdlovsk Regional Directorate of the Federal Security Service of Russia.

Due to the long procedure of obtaining permission from the Supreme Judges’ Qualifications Board of the Russian Federation, the probe into Federal Arbitration Court judge Gavryushin was launched only in June 2019.

The investigation gathered sufficient evidence in the shortest time possible.

The court has found Gavryushin guilty and sentenced him to 8 years of imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony, a fine of 14 million rubles, and deprivation of the right to hold public service positions for 5 years.

The court has also reviewed the probe into the mediator and sentenced him to 7.5 years of imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony and to deprivation of the right to occupy positions in the public service related to administrative-economic powers for a period of 3 years.
