The Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia has finished the investigation into a traffic accident involving a passenger car driven by Sergey Yermakov and entailing the death of a passenger.
The criminal inquiry into the traffic accident was launched by internal affairs units of Perm Territory only a year after the accident. Upon an initiative of the Investigative Committee of Russia, the probe was removed and referred to the Central Office of the Investigative Committee for further investigation.
It was established that key material evidence for the probe (car, clothes, and Yermakov’s medical documents) was lost as a result of the willful actions of police investigator Nadezhda Matveeva. These circumstances enabled Yermakov to mislead the investigation about his location in the car in the moment of the accident and became a reason for the inability of experts to conclude on the positioning of Yermakov and the victim in the car.
Once the probe was referred to the Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia, the investigation carried out a thorough work for collecting evidence, which enabled experts to make a clear conclusion that the car had been driven by the accused.
He has been charged with violation of traffic safety rules entailing by negligence the death of a person (Article 264 of the Criminal Code of Russia) and subjected to house detention. The accused has admitted his guilt and testified.
The investigation gathered enough evidence; therefore, the criminal case with the approved indictment has been sent to the court to be tried on the merits.
Previously, the court found former investigator Nadezhda Matveeva guilty of abuse of authority. The criminal proceedings against her were terminated due to an amnesty act.
