Former Deputy Chairman of Government of Mordovia Republic detained on suspicion of bribe-giving

Former Deputy Chairman of Government of Mordovia Republic  - minister for targeted programmes Alexey Merkushin has been detained on suspicion of bribe-giving  by officers of the Economic Security and Anti-Corruption Department of the republican interior ministry upon instruction of an investigator of the Mordovia Republican Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia while attempting to cross the border. He is suspected of committing an offense under Part 5 of Article 291 of the Criminal Code of Russia (bribe-giving).

 

According to investigation, in 2015 the suspect, being a factual shareholder of Mordovpromstroybank, in cooperation with the Board Chairman of the bank and another bank shareholder handed over a bribe of over 7 million rubles to the manager of the Mordovia National Republican Bank Department of Volga-Vyatsky Main Department of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. The remuneration was handed over for withdrawal of order upon results of inspection of the bank since violations detected during the inspection could lead to withdrawal of license.

 

Previously in terms of the probe the former manager of the National Bank accused of bribery (Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of Russia) has been subject to house detention in terms of the probe. The former Mordovpromstroibank Board Chairman accused of bribe-giving (Part 5 of Article 291 of the Criminal Code of Russia) was placed into custody.  Apart from that, the third perpetrator of the probe into bribery was subject to house detention in relation to another probe.

 

Investigative actions are being carried out in order to establish all the circumstances of the committed offenses. In the nearest future the investigator will motion the court to elect a preventive measure for the detainee. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
