In Kirov Region, sentence imposed over a former police officer in relation to a probe into a road accident entailing death of a child

Evidence, collected by the Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia was found by court to be sufficient to sentence former police officer operative attendant of Nemsky checkpoint of Kilmezsky Intermunicipal Division of the Interior Ministry of Russia Sergey Mezensky. He was found guilty of committing an offense under Part 3 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of Russia (violation of road safety rules entailing by negligence death of a person).

Due to high public resonance the probe was referred to the Central Office of the Investigative Committee of Russia for further comprehensive investigation upon instruction of the Chairman of the Committee.

Investigation and the court established that in July 2019 in Buyskoe settlement of Kirov Region, Menshikov was driving a Nissan Qashqai car exceeding speed limit and ran over a 6-year-old boy who rode his bike into the central street from a dirt road. As a result of the road accident the child died on site from the multiple injuries.

Circumstances of the incident have been restored through careful examination of the collected evidence and results of numerous examinations including 2 technical, a medical, a forensic and a trace examination.

The court sentenced Menshikov to 2.5 years of imprisonment and deprived him from driving rights for 3 years. He will serve his sentence in a settlement colony.

An expert Sergey Novikov has been sentenced earlier. He was found guilty of negligence at performing forensic examination of the body of the child killed by a road accident (Part 1 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code of Russia).
