In Irkutsk Region, a third sentence imposed over Mikhail Popkov for murder of women

The evidence gathered by the Irkutsk Regional Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation was found by the court to be sufficient to sentence 57-year-old Mikhail Popkov. He was found guilty of committing an offense under Paragraph H of Article 102 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (intentional aggravated murder of two persons).

Investigation and the court established that during the night of 13-14 July 1995 Popkov committed a murder of a previously unknown woman. Apart from that, he informed investigation that he is involved in another murder committed in 1995. Then he dealt with a woman in a similar way in a forest behind the territory of the convoy in Angarsk.

Popkov wrote a confession about these crimes while serving two life sentences in a special-regime correctional colony for a series of murders of women. In summer 2020 the convict was escorted to Irkutsk Region for required investigative actions. 

On June 4, 2021 Mikhail Popkov was found guilty by court sentence. Taking into account the opinion of the state prosecution, he was sentenced to 9 years and 8 months of imprisonment. Taking into account the previous sentences, Popkov was sentenced to life imprisonment in a special regime colony.
