Another member of Basayev's gang, involved in the attack on servicemen of the 6th paratrooper company of the Pskov Airborne Division, was detained

The Main Investigations Directorate over North Caucasian Federal District of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation continues investigation into the armed attack committed on February 29, 2000 by the united armed gang led by Basaev and Khattab in the forested mountain area of Ulus-Kert rural settlement in Shatoy Disctrict of the Chechen Republic against military personnel of the 6th squadron of the 104th regiment of the 76th Pskov Airborne Division. The attack entailed the death of 84 soldiers and injuries of varying severity to four soldiers.

In terms of investigation a member of Basaev's gang Magomed Alkhanov born in the Chechen Republic was detained on suspicion of committing the offense in collaboration with the unit of the Russian Federal Security Service and the Main Department for the North-Caucasian Federal District of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

Due to the especial severity of the offenses committed, the investigation is intended to press charges against Alkhanov under Article 279, Part 2 of Article 209 and Article 317 of the Criminal Code of Russia (armed rebel, participation in an armed gang and encroachment on a life of servicemen) and motion the court to place him into custody.

At present, the investigation is establishing roles and exact actions the suspect had taken in the attack and checking his involvement in other offenses not related to this criminal case. Investigation is taking active measures to identify other gang participants involved in the attack. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
