A memorial in the memory of Dmitry Novoselov - a schoolboy who paid his life to save children - opened in Chelyabinsk Region

On May 24, 2019 two 10-year-old boy fell in the water while playing on a bank of a flooded quarry near Kopeisk and started drowning. Their cries for help were heard by 13-year-old Dmitry Novoselov, a pupil of school No. 48 and Young Army participant, who was riding his bike nearby. Dima jumped into the water and saved the children at the cost of his own life. By decree of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Novoselov was posthumously awarded the Medal "For Life Saving". The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation also noted Dima's feat, and his father was awarded the Medal "Valor and Courage".

On behalf of the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Alexander Bastrykin for the sake of perpetuating the memory of the selfless young man and his heroic deed the leadership of the Chelyabinsk Regional Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia in cooperation with the regional administration organized the installation of the memorial.

The solemn opening of a memorial to Dmitry Novoselov took place on August 12, 2021 in the city of Kopeysk, and was attended by his father Alexander Novoselov, Deputy Head for Educational Outreach Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia Vasily Lopatin, Head of the Chelyabinsk Regional Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia Petr Reshetnikov, as well as the leadership of local government and executive branch of the region, students of the Russian organization "Young Army", the students of school No. 48, representatives of public organizations.

Addressing the audience, the Deputy Head for Educational Outreach Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia Vasily Lopatin noted that the Investigative Committee of Russia acknowledged Dima's feat - his father was awarded "Valor and courage" medal. This medal is awarded to citizens for selflessness shown in life- and health-threatening situations, in extraordinary circumstances that required courageous decision-making. We will always remember the name of Dmitry Novoselov and the feat that became an example of courage, bravery and valour.

The head of the investigative department, Peter Reshetnikov, noted that Dima immediately, without thinking twice, rushed to help the children in trouble. He managed to pull the children out, but didn't have the strength to get to shore himself. This deed reflected the best human qualities: compassion, selflessness, courage, which put him on a par with the heroes of our time.

The pupils of school No. 48 recited poems of their own:

...He happened to be in the quarries,

Not seeing the trouble ahead.

He saw children playing so dangerous

Steep coast. Loud scream.

They teach in Young Army - a friend must be never abandoned,

And Dima rushed to rescue at once...

In conclusion Alexander Novoselov, the boy's father, addressed the audience and thanked all the participants for helping him in his difficult time.

It was decided to involve the investigative department in the organization, together with community organizations, of the regional annual hand-to-hand combat sports tournament and other activities to involve children in important social projects to perpetuate the memory of Dmitry's heroic deed.
