In the Republic of Komi, sentence imposed to the former minister of internal affairs that was found guilty of especially large-scale bribery and legalization of funds acquired in an illegal way


The evidence collected by the Komi Republican Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia was found by court to be sufficient to sentence former internal affairs minister of the Komi Republic Viktor Polovnikov. He was found guilty of bribery on an especially large scale (Part 6 of Article 290 of the Criminal Code of Russia) and legalization of funds acquired in an illegal way (Paragraph B of Part 4 of Article 174.1 of the Criminal Code of Russia).

The investigation and the court established that in 2017, the perpetrator, being the Minister of Internal Affairs for the Komi Republic, received 14 million rubles from the total amount of 25 million rubles through intermediaries as a bribe. Illegal monetary reward was received for assisting a person accused of fraud and money laundering, a criminal case against whom was investigated by the investigative department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Komi Republic. In particular, the minister instructed to change a preventive measure for the said accused person from placement into custody to travel and behavior restrictions. Also, the qualifying feature - the commission of crimes by an organized group - was excluded from charges brought against him. A part of the illegal cash remuneration was legalized by purchase of an apartment in a town house and a share for a land plot.

The investigation was opened upon materials of officers of the Russian Federal Security Service in the Republic of Komi and was carried out with their operational support.

He was sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony, with a fine of 14,5 million rubles. In addition, the former minister is deprived of the right to hold certain positions for 5 years and the rank of Major General of Police.
