The Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia instructed to appeal against the court's decision to deny the request for the detention of a suspect in the criminal case of methanol poisoning in Kazan

The Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan continues to investigate a criminal case regarding poisoning of citizens of the republic with methanol under paragraphs A, C of Part 2 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code (sale of products that do not meet the safety requirements for life or health of consumers).

To remind, on November 16-17, 2021 in Kazan 14 young people born between 1999 and 2003 were hospitalized with signs of methanol poisoning. One of them passed away. Currently investigators established that on the night of November 15-16 a group of 18 young people celebrated the birthday of one of them in the cottage in Salmachi settlement of Kazan. Fourteen of them drank alcoholic beverages after which they felt sick and sought medical help.

The investigation continues to establish the circumstances of sale of counterfeit alcohol, as well as persons involved in the manufacture of alcoholic beverages. A 37-year-old local resident was detained on suspicion of committing the offense.

The measure of restraint in the form of detention for the suspect in the sale of alcoholic beverages, which was requested by the investigation, was not selected. The court dismissed the petition, and the prosecutor's office did not appeal this decision. Due to the fact that further activities of this person may lead to a repetition of such a tragedy, and given the need to identify the manufacturer of counterfeit liquid, the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia instructed his subordinates to appeal against the court decision to deny the application for placement into custody.

Alexander Bastrykin instructed the head of the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Republic of Tatarstan Lipsky V.A. to report again on the progress of the investigation and conducted investigative actions.
